I have been asked by my in-laws to create a segmented bowl that they can give as a wedding gift. I have been looking at Hawaiian tapa cloth patterns and like one that is a chevron and a checkerboard pattern mixed together. I made the bowl so there is maple around the top and walnut around the bottom and the two woods mix in the pattern running around the bowl. I thought this was a nice metaphor of two people joining together.

Stair - I made a stair into the shop from glulam beams I salvaged from the pool house that we demolished to build the shop. The stair consists of two heavy sides connected by 3 stair treads. The stair is on wheels and the idea is that it can be both a stair and a platform to help get heavy machinery and materials in and out of the shop. It can also be a step ladder to get to high storage around the shop.

Christmas Ornament 2014 - With this ornament, I wanted to bring wood from two different trees on our property together. The Ornament would be a sphere with birch wood on the upper half and Deodar Cedar on the bottom half. The two woods would come together in a zigzag pattern in the middle.

Wood Rack - I have had a problem in the shop where I have many different stashes of wood. This has made the shop cluttered and hard to find anything useful when I needed it. I have made a wood rack from 2x4s. It is a series of wood frames held together with mortise and tenon joints. The frames are held together at the top and bottom to form cubbies for different sized pieces of wood. This should help keep the scrap wood in the shop organized.

I have wanted to introduce curves into the patterns of segmented woodturning. Kuldeep Singh offered to send me one of his all metal pantorouters and I thought this would allow me to cut curves into the patterns of segmented turning. I started with a maple bowl I rough turned about a year ago and added a walnut ring to the top. I then used the pantorouter to make 12 holes in the bowl as well as the plugs to fit perfectly in those holes. I tuned to bowl ring and rain drop shaped plugs on the lathe into a finished 14 inch diameter bowl.

Sake Trays - I was asked to design and build wooden sake trays for a new Japanese restaurant - Bamboo Izakaya. The client asked for something a little more rustic than what they were using. My first prototype was too big and too rustic, and it did not have an under cut on the bottom edge so it could be easily picked up. The second prototype had the right form but I did not have a good solution for making the holes in the top to receive the glasses. The third prototype, that was approved by the client, was made from a top piece of rough walnut and a smooth, rectangular bottom piece of walnut. I drilled three holes in the top piece to receive the glasses. The two pieces were glued together to make the final form.

I was asked to build a frame to hold an antique Japanese door next to the bar in a new Japanese Restaurant - Bamboo Izakaya. The frame is constructed from oak to be durable as it will be in a high circulation area. The door is held in a rabbet in the oak frame. The frame is held together by attaching it to a torsion box above and below the door.

I was asked to build a frame to hold paper lanterns above the bar in a new Japanese restaurant - Bamboo Izakaya. The frame is constructed from 2 by 2 cedar lumber. I made small rabbets and dados at each intersection of the frame to help align and hold the frame together.

Marker Board - I have made a marker board to hang on our French cleat by our side door. The structure is a rail and stile frame with two infill panels. The upper panel is the marker board. The lower is plywood. It also has two shelves. One is for the pens and one is for things we need by the side door. The rails and stiles are made of oak.

Shoe and Laundry Storage Bench - At our carport door, we have our laundry room and storage for things that we use when going outdoors like shoes, coats and backpacks. It was not very well organized. The project is to take down the existing upper cabinets and build a storage system for the outdoor things and the laundry. The storage system consists of a horizontal piece with shoe storage inside and a bench on top, and a vertical piece with adjustable shelves for laundry storage. The cabinets are made from prefinished birch plywood and the bench is oak.

I have made a stand for my grinder that I use for sharpening my wood turning tools. The stand is a plywood box with shelves on the inside. On the top, the grinder sits on an old growth fir cap that is flush with the box. Two bolts hold the wood cap and grinder to the plywood box. On the front is a door to access the shelves inside of the box. In the bottom of the box is a space I have filled with drain rock to give weight to the bottom of the stand.

Sun Clock - I have had some maple wood set aside to make a mid century modern sun clock. I started this clock by wood turning 12 spindles. I then made a segmented hub from wood of the same maple tree. I drilled 12 holes in this hub to receive the tenon on each spindle. This allowed the spindles to radiate out like rays from the hub. I did a final turning of the hub and spindles together on the lathe to make a space for the clock. I think this helps to tie the whole piece together.

Closet System - We have a broom closet just off of our kitchen. It was not cluttered, but it needed a makeover. We wanted to use the space of the closet more efficiently. I built a French cleat system for the closet which consists of a wood wall panel system of cleats on which various storage devices could be hung. I built both shelves and hooks to hang on the wall panels. This system allows us to customize the storage configuration of the closet as needed to use the closet very efficiently.

Whirligig - My dad reintroduced my kids and I to a toy he had had when he was a boy. It has a few names: sawmill, buzzer, and Colonial Whirligig to name a few. It is usually made with a big button and a string. The string is looped through the button and you can make the button spin at the center of the wound up string. I thought this would make a good woodturning project.

I turned a walnut bowl with a segmented rim. I wanted to have the dark color of the bowl mix with a light colored rim. My thought was to do a zigzag pattern, between the two woods. What I ended up doing was to make each segment contain two triangles of walnut with birch infilling. I wanted to shape the bowl itself with a rounded rim to contrast the sharpness of the segmented pattern.

Medicine Cabinet - Our medicine cabinet was in desperate need of replacement. It had been hacked together by a previous owner and it did not fill its full potential. Our house is in the mid-century modern style and has no trim on the interior. Each door and window is just an opening in the wall. This is the design language I wanted to use for our new medicine cabinet. I removed the old medicine cabinet and cleaned up the hole in the wall with corner bead and plaster. This gave me a clean opening in the wall. I wanted the new doors to the medicine cabinet to be flush with the wall and be framed in the newly made opening. Each door frames a mirror I cut from salvaged mirror. Behind the doors are two birch plywood boxes making up the body of the medicine cabinet. I added adjustable shelves.

Bathroom Cabinets - This project to build two new bathroom cabinets is part of a bigger project to replace the plumbing system in our house. In this video I will be removing the old cabinets and building the new cabinets. I will do the installation of the new cabinets in the next video. The two cabinets are very similar, each consisting of a section for a sink and a section with two banks of drawers. The sink section is a simple box with doors on the front. The drawer section will have two columns of drawers; one bathroom will be 3 drawers tall and the other 4 drawers tall. The counter tops are plastic laminate, one orange and one black. The structure is made from 3/4 inch pre-finished birch plywood. In this second video, I will install the cabinet in the master bathroom. I will also make and install the drawer fronts and doors, made from khaya, a type of African mahogany. I use an edge banding tongue and groove router bit to make the edge pieces on the drawer fronts and doors. I cut the hole for the sink and the plumber installed the sink.

Bookends - These bookends are made from walnut and birch. The design idea was to abstract a half open book. The form is an "L" representing the binding and a quarter of a segmented wood turned piece representing the pages in the "L." The piece is solid to make it as heavy as possible to help hold back the books.

Turning wood on the lathe produces a lot of wood chips. Turning big pieces of green wood produces even more. I decided adding doors and drawers to the lathe cabinet would help in cleaning up after turning. In this video, I add 3 doors with Salice Series 200 hinges to the cabinet. In addition, I make three drawer boxes for the cabinet.

Making a Case for Books - This is the fully animated story of making four bookcases. The four cases are made from two pieces of walnut veneer plywood with almost no waste. The base for the cases is made from solid walnut with mitered corners The bookcases are 33 inches tall and 47 inches wide. The finish is wipe on polyurethane. They fit under and within the spacing of the windows in the living room.

Calvin and Claire had two snow days last week and we wanted to make a table to elevate our cat's food and water dishes. The kids designed the table consisting of a 6 x 12 inch walnut top with triangular legs representing cat ears. We had a lot of fun building the table, playing in the snow, and staying warm.

The rough turned maple bowl that I wanted to finish next had cracked. The crack was at an angle to vertical when the bowl was sitting normally. I cut out the section of the bowl with the crack on the band saw. Then I build a new segmented piece to take the place of the section. In this new section, I continue the idea of the chevron pattern, and add more detail. I give the chevron pattern branches by adding alternating pieces of birch and walnut wood on either side of the pattern. I also add a walnut ring at the top of the bowl so the segmented pattern has something to die into. Then I turn the whole bowl down to a finished piece.

I made two picture frames. They are made from a cherry tree that I milled into lumber back in 2006 using a chainsaw and band saw. The wood has been drying for seven and a half years. In the video, I jointed and planed the wood to a thickness of one inch. I cut the wood into two inch strips that will become the frames. The corners are mitered and glued. The corners are reinforced with walnut splines. The photographs in the frames are historical pictures of the Steel and Broadway Bridges here in Portland. The wood for the frames came from a cherry tree and walnut tree within two miles of these bridges. This is a very local project.

Jelly asked me to make two boxes for the downstairs area of his studio. This area is also the home to Limbo Inc., a juice and smoothie bar and organic market. The boxes are half the length and height of the benches I made earlier. For the boxes, I made a frame mitered at the corners with wood biscuits. The bottom floats in a dado, cut in that frame, giving the bottom strength and allowing it to move as it expands and contracts over time. The intended uses for the boxes are as a step stool, a small desk, and whatever else that dimension will yield.

A year ago I liberated some maple wood from a firewood stash. I turned it into several bowl roughs. Now I am finishing the first of those bowls. This bowl rough had cracked. I cut the section of the bowl with the crack out on the band saw. Then I made a new segmented section to fill in that section. The new section is made of walnut and maple from the same tree. The grain of the new piece is oriented the same way as the original bowl. The pattern in the segments of the new piece make a chevron pattern by flipping every other segment.

Nesting Stacking Toy - I had the idea for this nesting toy last summer when I was recording the sound of the big band saw by cutting scraps of wood. In thinking through the shapes for this toy, I realized one problem was going to be thin pieces of wood running perpendicular to the grain making the piece very fragile. I solved this by sandwiching three pieces of wood together: a piece of purple heart between two pieces of walnut with an alternating grain pattern like plywood. I made a finger jointed wood box to hold the three sections of the toy.

This is a commissioned bowl for a birthday present for the wife of a friend of mine. Her name is Leslie and her nickname is sometimes L$ so the thought was to abstract this into a pattern for a decorative ring of a segmented bowl. The L was easy to making into segmented wood pieces but the $ took a little more work. What I ended up with is a series of triangles forming an abstracted $. The bowl is made with walnut for the darker wood and hard maple for the lighter wood. It is made with twelve segments, and is about 14 inches in diameter.

I had made shelving units for the wood shop that hung on my French cleat system. The shelves do not work well for smaller items as there is no way to organize small pieces and the space of the shelf above the small pieces goes unused. I made simple drawers from 3/8 inch Russian birch plywood. I cut dados in the bottom piece and attached sides and dividers with those dados. I butt jointed a back and front to that. The front is a 1/2 inch wider than the drawer to hide the maple runners that the drawers slide on. This was a prototype and when I do this again, I will try making a frame with the vertical pieces first, then attaching the bottom to that.

My friend, Jelly Helm, is moving his studio to a more retail type of setting. The new space is a rectangular volume with a mezzanine in the rear half of the space. In the first video, I enhance the existing railing at the edge of the mezzanine. The design I came up with is a series of slats attached to the existing railing. The idea is to provide some privacy from below and allow light into the mezzanine. The slats are made from reclaimed Douglas fir.

Woodworking camp - My son, Calvin, and I built a toy ferry boat out of a piece of alder. Calvin drew up a design and had a clear vision of what he wanted in his new toy boat. In the end, the boat did not stay up right very well in the water. It will be more fun as an indoor toy boat. If anything this was a great bonding experience between Calvin and I.

Lawn chair - This lawn chair is made from sequoia that I cut up with my friend Brian about 2 years ago.  The chair consists of a frame roughly defining a cube. The seat and back sit within this frame and are made of slats hung on two cylinders running between the sides of the frame. The back can recline.  The concept for the chair is a striped beach towel hanging over a chair.

Maple clock 2 - This is the second clock I have made from the extra pieces of the large chunk of maple I milled last summer.  For this clock, I made a segmented section where the clock hands go that indicate hours.  I then turned a space for the hands of the clock and sanded the outer surface.

Maple clock 1 - This is the first clock I have made from the extra pieces of the large chunk of maple I milled last summer. I wood turned a place for the clock to go in this piece of maple.  The idea is that the hands of the clock had been on this piece of maple for a very long time and had worn circles into the wood.
